Phil Tweed Trio

Phil Tweed is a singer/songwriter who moved to Australia from New Zealand in 1989. He has a degree and a diploma in classical piano, is a church minister, has five children and still manages to find time to write and perform music. He has played with Craig Calhoun, Makin' Whoopee, The Cool Dudes, The Chris Bathgate Band, Wine and Roses and Saxanova, and supported Marcia Hines, Grace Knight and Shirley Bassey. Phil's main influences include Sting, Steely Dan, Spyrogyra, Nick Kershaw, Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. Phil just received the honour of winning Best Male Vocal in the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards (2003). His song 'Seasons of Change' was a top five finalist in the jazz category of the same competition, and his song 'Kisses From Heaven' was judged a finalist in the Unisong Song Contest – one of the largest song competitions in the world. He also runs a music venue/café in Newcastle called the Soapbox Café, which features the very best in Australian musicians, while raising funds to feed homeless and disadvantaged people in the Newcastle CBD.
